Bahamas Golf Vacation

There is such a lot to see and do on these islands. You can charter a boat and go on an island hop tour. That should keep you busy, there are over 700 islands at the last count. There are many ways in which to explore on a Bahamas vacation. You can rent a car, scooter or a bicycle (British driving regulations apply), or take a taxi. There are ferry services, including a fast service and it's also possible to take the slow route on the mailboat. Guided tours can be arranged.

Nassau, on New Providence Island, is the exciting capital city. It's a casino town and there is plenty of nightlife with live shows and clubs, and opportunities to learn about the history of the islands. There's some great restaurants and hotels too.

The islands are a paradise if you want a sporty time. Keen scuba divers and snorkellers love to go on a Bahamas vacation. There are 29 different locations where divers like to go and take advantage of the visibility in the water. They're rewarded with fabulous reefs, caves and numerous shipwrecks. Sharks are a common sight and you can go on trips for swimming with dolphins.

Fishing is another favorite activity here, including deep-sea fishing, flat fishing and bonefishing. You can charter a boat or stay in a fishing lodge. It's worth noting that spear fishing and spear guns are against the law here on a Bahamas vacation.

Grand Bahama Island boasts four of the most beautiful championship golf courses in the Caribbean.

Grand Lucaya, Grand Bahama Island
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., The Reef Course opened in 2000. The Bahamian press called it a bit like a Scottish course, "but a lot warmer." The course boasts 6,920 yards of links-style greens.

Cable Beach, Nassau
The main draw is the Cable Beach Golf Course. The oldest golf course in The Bahamas, this par-72 green was the private retreat of British expatriates in the 1930s. Today it's managed by a corporate namesake of Arnold Palmer and owned by Cable Beach casino marketers. Small ponds and water traps heighten the challenge, amid more than 7,040 yards of well-maintained greens and fairways.

Paradise Island
Tom Weiskopf designed Ocean Club Golf Club an 18-hole, par-72 course, and it's a stunner. With challenges that include the world's largest sand trap and water hazards (mainly the Atlantic Ocean) on three sides, the course has received praise from Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. For the best panoramic ocean view -- good enough to take your mind off your game -- play the par-3 14th hole.

The Exumas
At long last, the Southern Bahamas has a world-class golf course: Four Seasons Resort Emerald Bay Golf Club opens onto the waters of Emerald Bay. The par-72, 18-hole course was designed by Greg Norman, who created six oceanfront holes. The course is challenging yet not daunting, so it appeals to golfers of various skills.
