Myrtle Beach Golf Vacation

Fun is the keyword along the Grand Strand region of South Carolina. It's a popular tourist spot along this bit of coastline and includes the city of Myrtle Beach, which receives more than 14 million visitors alone. A Myrtle Beach vacation is a gateway to all the great beaches and facilities. Keen shoppers have plenty retail outlets and the restaurants are of a high standard, many of them specializing in local seafood.

The long standing Sun Fun Festival is designed to get everyone in holiday mood. It takes place at the start of June and includes beauty pageants, parades and human checker board games. It's a favorite with tourists and locals and demonstrates the area's sense of humor. Anyone not wearing shorts or swimwear during the festival gets a fine!

Music is important to the area and there are lots of venues to hear live artists. A Myrtle Beach vacation is an opportunity to go to one of the locations for the famous House of Blues chain. This franchise, associated with actors Dan Ackroyd and the Belushi brothers has the best in music and southern dishes. There is family entertainment at the Carolina Opry, a variety show that plays different sorts of music including show tunes.

There are several golf links that will appeal to the experienced golfer and excellent tennis courts too. The area has more than 120 golf courses and the city claims that it has the most miniature courses of any region in the world. Whether that is a true statement or not, a Myrtle Beach vacation is an ideal break for golfers.

Founders Club at Pawley's Island is among the newest additions to the Grand Strand, joining its upscale neighbors on the Waccamaw Golf Trail south of Myrtle Beach. The golf course features seamless undulation changes, native orange and gold sand and lowcountry oaks. The revamped facility boasts a new clubhouse overlooking the 10th and 18th greens that has a wrap-around porch, dining and meeting areas and office space.

Tom Fazio created this masterpiece and it has long since claimed it's place among the top in the area. Hosting the Senior Tour Championship, this course allows guests the privilege of playing a championship course and testing their skill on the same grounds that famous golfers have walked. The expertly manicured fairways and greens meander through towering pines and expansive wetlands truly reflecting a tour-caliber course.

Shaftesbury Glen was designed by Clyde Johnston but inspired by A.W. Tillinghast's famed West Course at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., right down to the bentgrass greens. No. 1, a par 4 hole, features a laser straight fairway capped by a Tillinghast-esque elevated green with a flashed up bunker on its left front. This style of bunkering is omnipresent until the par four 18th, which sports five greenside traps. Johnston created a unique golf course amid a sea of clones.

Caledonia Golf and Fish Club
Built upon the site of an authentic colonial rice plantation, Caledonia Golf & Fish Club has captured world-wide recognition for its breathtaking aesthetic beauty as well as its exceptional design. Careful to preserve the natural surrounding, including hundreds of centuries old live oaks, architect Mike Strantz has risen to the top of the most wanted designer list with this, his first solo design.

No other course in America gained so much recognition in 1995.Some have even stated that Caledonia may just be the best new course to be built in America in the past 20 years.

The city was seen on the big screen in 1989 when the film, Shag was released. Largely shot in the area, it starred Bridget Fonda and Phoebe Cates. It did not merely serve as a pleasant location however. The local dance, called the Shag, gave the film its inspiration. This dance, designated as the state dance of North and South Carolina, was a Myrtle Beach invention and it has entries into dance competitions across the country. It developed from the jitterbug dance of the 1940s, when people strutted their stuff to the big, swing bands of the day. Nowadays, the sound of R&B and music played at beach parties, accompanies the dance.

Accommodation in the area is varied, from luxury hotels to campgrounds. There are beach side condominiums; bed and breakfast lodgings and many hotels do all in golfing packages. A Myrtle Beach golf vacation is suited to the active or those who just want to soak up the rays and listen to the blues.
